Honda’s small car will be more expensive than you thought!

The Honda small car concept shown at the 2010 Auto Expo is one the highly awaited small cars for 2011, not just for India, but for the entire Asian region. But in a brief chat with the media recently, Honda Motor Corporation Chief Operating Officer (Asia and Oceania) Fumihiko Ike said that the small car is not expected to compete in the ‘volume segment’ of the small car market
in India. He confirmed that the small car project is moving forward in
full swing but the car maker hasn’t finalised on the engines just yet.
But going by the tax bracket benefits that carmakers in India are
after, it’s safe to presume that the Honda will be powered by the same
or detuned 1.2 litre mill that powers the Jazz.

Even though the
Japanese giant’s sales figures are showing a constant decline in
India, a mass producer like Honda still wishes to consider itself a
niche player and would like to price the car slightly above the
competition. We are hence expecting a Ford Figo / Suzuki Swift
competing spec sheet at a price tag slightly higher than the Polo – so
much for Honda reliability!

Do you think such a price tag makes sense especially after Honda has
tasted failure with a potent car like the Jazz? Or is Honda takings its customers for a ride yet again by selling products at exorbitant rates? Let us know what you
