The Maruti 800 has been resurrected in China with a Jiangnan TT nameplate, and is manufactured by Jiangnan Auto, a subsidiary of Zotye Automobile. The Jiangnan TT is based on the second generation Suzuki Alto (1984-1988), the very same car that we also know as the ubiquitous Maruti 800. The listed price is 20,800 yuan, but according to the source of this article, dealers are already offering a 5,000 yuan discount, which brings down the price down to 15,800 yuan, or just INR 1.63 lakhs, making it the cheapest car on sale in China. Save for the new bumpers, clear-lens headlamps, roof rails (?) and some attachments to the rear hatch, the TT’s appearance is almost too familiar.

Like the 800 that was, the Jiangnan TT is also powered by a 800 cc petrol engine, which is rated at 36 horsepower and 60 Nm of torque, good for a top speed of 120 km/h. The engine is mated to a four-speed manual transmission, which sends power to the front wheels – pretty much the set-up any mechanic in China’s hinterland with Warrior paintings on his shop walls can take down and fix up in a jiffy. Along with go-kart like handling and an incredibly direct mechanical steering set-up, the Jiangnan TT measures just 3.3 meters long and 1.4 meters wide, which means it’ll headily scamper through the tightest of Chinese alleys, deftly negotiating the noodle shops and the Kongming lanterns.
