Baojun Yep Plus SUV Breaks Cover

Baojun has pulled back the curtain on its latest creation, the Yep Plus SUV based on the MG Comet EV

This 5-door electric marvel, based on the same platform as the MG Comet EV, promises to make waves with its extended wheelbase, powerful motor, and sleek design.

Set to hit the Chinese market by March 2024, the Yep Plus is positioned alongside its smaller 3-door sibling, the Yep.

Design and Dimensions

Baojun has elongated the 3-door Yep to accommodate rear doors, resulting in a substantial increase in size. The Yep Plus boasts a wheelbase of 2,560mm, a remarkable 450mm longer than its smaller counterpart. The overall length has also been extended by approximately 600mm to enhance both aesthetics and functionality.

Design-wise, the Yep Plus shares a striking resemblance with its 3-door counterpart, featuring a boxy, Jimny-inspired look with modern elements like sleek headlights and new alloy wheels.

Powertrain and Performance

While Baojun has yet to discuss the battery specifics, the Yep Plus is expected to house a larger unit than the Yep’s 28.1kWh battery.

This assumption is supported by the impressive claimed range of 401km, a significant leap from the Yep’s 303km. The electric SUV is equipped with a potent 102hp rear axle-mounted motor, delivering a swift acceleration from 0 to 100kph in no time. Baojun boasts a top speed of 150kph.

MG’s Contribution into the Yep Series

The Yep Plus and the MG Comet EV share a common platform, the Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV). MG Motor India has already trademarked the Yep’s design, hinting at the arrival of its own version, likely the 3-door model, codenamed E260.

Expected to hit the Indian market by 2025, MG’s offering will stand as a contender in the electric SUV segment, potentially competing with models like the Tata Punch EV.

SAIC Motor’s Strategic Moves

MG Motor’s parent company, SAIC Motor, has strategically partnered with the JSW Group, holding a 35 percent stake in a joint venture aimed at expanding the British brand’s presence in India.

This collaboration focuses on introducing both Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles and New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) to the Indian market, showcasing a commitment to both traditional and electric mobility.

Our Take

As Baojun unveils the Yep Plus SUV, the electric vehicle realm witnesses another stride toward innovation and sustainability. The extended wheelbase, robust powertrain, and sleek design position the Yep Plus as a formidable player in the electric SUV arena.
