Exter Vs Punch – Does The New Hyundai Pack a Bigger Punch?

There is no doubt that micro SUVs are taking over hatchbacks. Hyundai’s is tackling this trend by launching a Micro SUV based on it’s best selling hatchback. Thus the Hyundai Exter is born based on the Grand i10 Nios, it shares the same basic platform as the i10 but Hyundai has made big changes to make it an Micro SUV, we will discuss these changes and we will pit it against its biggest rival the Tata Punch.

Hyundai Exter

Hyundai Exter, the smallest SUV in Hyundai’s lineup, will be built on the i10 platform and will be powered by the 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine from the i10. This engine produces 82bhp and 113 Nm of torque. It will be available with a 5-speed manual transmission as well as an automatic option.

Hyundai is promoting the Exter with some noteworthy features that it claims are firsts in the segment. These include a fully customizable digital instrument cluster, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and an in-built dash cam. These features are aimed at attracting customers and competing with the segment leader, Tata Punch.

First in segment features in Hyundai Exter

Hyundai is all set to launch its new SUV, known as the Exter, by next month. The Hyundai cars are known for their feature-loaded proposition, and Exter will be no different. For starters, the Exter will get a new advanced instrument cluster with digital dials. Furthermore, the cluster will have a total of 10 different regional languages. However, the instrument cluster of the Exter will have English as its default language along with 2 other global languages.

The other first in the segment features list includes sounds of nature, voice command, dual dashcam, and a sunroof. The sounds of nature and voice command assistant will be integrated into the infotainment system of the Exter. Other features include a Multi-functional steering wheel, auto AC, rear AC vents, height-adjustable driver seats, headrests on all seats, etc.

On paper the feature list of Hyundai sounds spectacular, but we are yet to see the pricing and how it all feels in the flesh.

Tata Punch

Tata Punch is uncontested till now, the Citroen C3 came close to punching distance but had lacked a few key features which lead the Tata Punch the undisputed king in the Micro SUV segment. In the Heart of the punch lies a 3-cyl 1.2 Litre Naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 85 bhp and 113.5nm, that being said the Hyundai unit feels smoother and tighter as seen on the i10 being a 4-cyl engine. Moreover it comes with an option of 5-Speed Manual or AMT.

Tata Punch’s cabin is impressive, with good quality plastics and an appealing color palette. Design of the cabin feels young and fresh. The higher variants feature a 7-inch touchscreen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with iRA connected car tech. However, the display appears smaller than expected and the graphic interface is overcrowded with information. Tata needs to improve its screen design. The top Creative trim includes a TFT screen on the instrument console, but the instruments housing and the shape of the hood have an outdated look.

Although squarish dials do not match the modern and attractive appearance of the rest of the car. Tata should take inspiration from Kia in terms of their gadgets and interfaces. As Tata introduces larger products in the future, improvements in this area are likely to occur.

Safety features of the Punch have been a major selling point, with its impressive 5-star rating in the global NCAP. This high safety rating has significantly enhanced the perceived quality and design of the car, making it more appealing to potential buyers.

Speculation

With 11th July coming soon, the wait is almost over for a complete breakdown of Exter. That being said on paper the feature list of Hyundai sounds spectacular, but we are yet to see the pricing and how it all works out in the flesh. Hyundai is also taking safety quite seriously. For Tata Punch buyers hold on and wait how things pan out in a few weeks.
