Many would have anticipated the Yamaha R25 when we had last posted about Yamaha’s big announcement due on today’s date. But we’d say it was an easy guess considering the emphasis given by Kunihiko Miwa- Yamaha Motor Corporation’s Senior Executive officer on Yamaha’s three cylinder technology. True to our anticipation, Yamaha Motor Company has unveiled the three cylinder 850cc Yamaha MT-09 motorcycle.
Yamaha states that “When we set out to develop the MT-09 our goal was to create a new kind of sport bike with three key elements that would set it apart from other models. First of all we wanted a new kind of engine developing strong and exciting torque. The chassis had to be compact and slim. And this next generation sport bike would need a unique character that would make every ride special. With its 850cc 3-cylinder engine, the new MT-09 produces remarkable levels of linear torque that redefine sport riding. The lightweight aluminium chassis is agile and easy to handle. And the naked bodywork with wide handlebars and flat seat gives confidence and control.”
Producing peak power of 115 ps @ 10,000 rpm and 87.5 nm of torque @ 8,500 rpm, the fuel injected three cylinder 850cc engine is mated to a six speed gearbox. With scales tipping at 188 kg (191 kg with ABS), the Yamaha MT-09 features an all new CF Aluminium die-cast frame and an asymmetrical rear swingarm with a horizontally mounted monocross suspension.
Ergonomics have been taken care of by a ‘slim fit’ riding position with the 14 litre tank with deep knee recesses tucking your knees comfortably with wide tapering handlebars and a long flat seat making the MT-09 suitable for all kinds of riding.
Corrosion proof Nanofilm coated three stainless steel downpipes are concealed into a short and compact EU-3 muffler. An all new set of 10 spoke alloy wheels are mounted with newly-developed radial tyres with 120/70ZR17 at the front and 180/55ZR17 at the rear. The new Yamaha MT-09 would retail in shades of Deep Armor, Blazing Orange, Matt Grey and Race Blu.
The Yamaha MT-09 seems Yamaha’s newfound step towards the three cylinder technology and it would be easy to expect this technology extending to its overall lineup in the near future.

@Akshay: LOL, may you get your Duke very soon 😉
@Eg: We all hope we had the Yammie 🙂
Its a very good step from Yamaha. It looks different, its lightweight, and it is unmatched by its rivals in its class in terms of power, torque and price. I would surely have had one(if i had the money, ofcourse) even if i am a pure sports bike fan.
Looks like a sculpted Duke!!! Actually Duke 390 is all over my mind… 😛
