Volkswagen’s 1.5-litre diesel engine will get bigger forced induction as the the company is reportedly planning to equip the oil burner with a larger turbocharger. The 1.5-litre unit was made specifically for the Indian market by downsizing its 1.6-litre motor.
The 1.5-litre TDI motor diesel is produced at the Volkswagen plant at Chakan, Pune and gets as many as 30 crucial engine components such as the turbocharger, connecting rods, and engine brackets which are sourced locally. Now, the car maker plans to further extend the list of equipment in its next phase of development. According to new reports, in its second phase of localisation, Volkswagen will equip its 1.5-litre with a relatively larger turbocharger that will be locally sourced.
The bigger turbocharger will result in an increase in performance although the figures may not vary by a huge margin. The current 1.5-litre oil burner comes in two states of tune, delivering 88 hp and 103 hp of power. With the new turbocharger, expect the power figures to rise to about 90 hp and 110 hp.
The new motor will propel products such as the Vento and Polo GT TDI along with other brands owned by the Volkswagen Group such as the Skoda Rapid.
