The Union Cabinet has approved the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016, which includes a steep rise in the traffic violations. The proposal will now be sent to the parliament for clearance before it comes into effect. The proposal will also bring cab aggregators under the motor vehicle law.

According to reports, hit-and-run cases will attract a payout of INRÂ 2 lakh as opposed to the current INRÂ 25,000 while the compensation for road fatalities will be to the tune of INRÂ 10 lakh. Currently, talking on the mobile can cost you INRÂ 1,000 but soon there could be a five fold increase for the same. If a minor is caught at the wheel, causing a fatal accident, the parents will face a fine of INRÂ 25,000 as well as three years in jail. It is also likely that the registration of the vehicle involved in the accident may be cancelled.
Offences such as driving without a seat-belt and riding a two wheeler without a helmet would result in a fine of INRÂ 1,000 as well as suspension of license for three months. A case of drunk driving could cost you as much as INRÂ 10,000. Cab aggregators, who would now come under the ambit of the Motor Vehicle law, could face a fine in the range of INRÂ 25,000- Rs. 1 lakh for violating licensing norms.

According to data released by the government, 400 people were killed every day on Indian roads in the year 2015. Once approved during the monsoon session of the parliament, the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016 is likely to reduce the number of fatalities and traffic violations as huge fines will act as a deterrent for the same.
