Chevrolet FNR Concept makes most supercars look unexciting, did we tell you it’s an autonomous EV?

Chevrolet FNR Concept was revealed at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show.

Seems like the world of autonomous cars is going to get a spectacular boost by what Chevrolet has unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show. The electric vehicle is autonomous and Chevrolet calls it the FNR Concept. If you think it looks astounding and space-age, you wouldn’t be too wrong. This is perhaps the coolest Chevy we have ever seen and easily beats the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Concept on terms of its ‘street cred’.

The interior of the FNR is out of this world, too. But, doesn’t seem like there’s any leather.

Do we care that the interior doesn’t seem to offer leather? Absolutely not, because look at it! If this doesn’t remind you of some sci-fi flick, then you need your head checked. The FNR Concept is the result of Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), a joint venture effort by General Motors. The whole goal of this team was to develop an autonomous electric car and by the looks of it, also make it look downright awesome! The FNR has a sci-fi capsule design and feature crystal laser headlights and taillights. Entry into this futuristic cabin is through some dragonfly dual swing doors; and you thought supercar doors were cool eh?

The doors on this Chevy make those on supercars look drab.

The designers of the FNR Concept possibly went through the sketching books of their kids for this one. However, what those sketches couldn’t have predicted, were the inclusion wireless auto-charging technology and magnetic hubless wheel electric motors. This Chevy also incorporates a roof-mounted radar and a barrage of sensors which can map out the surrounding terrain and guide the FNR autonomously.

Chevrolet FNR Concept could spawn films, which is usually the other way around.

The FNR Concept has two modes, one of which is the standard “you drive and keep a watch for traffic” mode. Then there is the autonomous or self-drive mode, which relieves you of your command behind the wheel and makes travel a bit more relaxing. That’s also helped by the front seats in the FNR, which swivel by 180-degrees so that the occupants can face each other. That might become awkward if you are travelling with someone who’s very chatty or boring, but you can’t blame this smart car for that. Still, if it gets too awkward, all you need to do is perform some hand-gestures and the front seats will turn once again and point you forward.

In self-drive mode, the front seats will rotate by 180-degrees. Good for conversing with those in the back.

Chevrolet says, “Engineering, design and electrification teams drew on their past experience developing electric concept vehicles. Their aim was to create a unique, intelligent vehicle for tomorrow’s younger consumers by utilizing innovative car networking technology”. Of course, we would all like to take one of these for a spin and maybe even buy one. That said, this is very much a prototype (hence the term “concept”) and full-fledged autonomous capability is still to come. However, we are sure that the future of self-driving cars wouldn’t be boring and looking at the Chevrolet FNR Concept, you can bet that autonomous doesn’t necessarily have to equate to mundane. Anyway, let us know what you think of this Transformer movie apt Chevy concept.
