In what seems to be a move to enforce life saving habits among riders, the traffic authorities have come up with a rule under which motorists without helmets will not be given petrol at fuel pumps. The move will see two traffic constables at each of the 223 fuel pumps located in and around the city of Mumbai.

To begin with, the police officials will create awareness for a period of 8 days after which they will start fining the offenders. The police will make a case against the offender at the fuel pump itself and demand the rider to get a helmet only after which he would be allowed to refuel his two-wheeler.

Ravi Shinde of the petrol dealer’s association said that two constables would be posted at each of the pumps from 8 am to 8 pm. He also added that the oil companies will do their bit by spreading awareness in the form of distributing pamphlets and putting up hoardings as well as banners.

The idea behind the initiative is not to refuse fuel to the customers but to appeal to them to wear a helmet as it is a necessary safety measure. The move comes barely a few days after the rule came into effect in the region of West Bengal. The same rule will also apply to the region of Kerala beginning August 1st itself.
