Motorcycle Law in Ghana, West Africa now only allows women to ride!

Since April this year, the Bawku town in Ghana has been plagued with violence by criminals who were always able to escape; thanks to fast motorcycles! In a bid to control the escalating situation, a ban was placed on riding motorbikes in Ghana.

The ban has now been lifted; but only for women! Since, the ruling was causing a lot of inconvenience in carrying out routine activities like household shopping or getting the sick transported to a hospital from rural areas. However, the women are forbidden to give a ride or to transport men under any circumstances. If found doing so, the woman is bound to be arrested following seizure of the motorbike.

  1. Paul, did you end up motorcycling in Ghana? What was the experience like? I may be studying in Ghana for a year and was planning on getting a motorcycle while there to get around and hopefully get some adventuring in as time permits.
