Maruti Suzuki Alto has taken the honours of being the world’s largest selling small car for the year 2010. The numbers lapped by India’s darling car is testimony to the incredible growth that the Indian car market has witnessed in the past few years. The Alto pipped the VW Golf in Germnay and VW Gol in Brazil to bring home the top honours. This is the first time in the history that an Indian car has become the top volumes grosser in the world.
The introduction of the more powerful and modern K10 version of the Alto helped the sales of the car greatly. Maruti Suzuki managed to sell more than 300,000 units of the Alto in the year 2010 – a whopping 25% increase over the past year. Maruti Suzuki is expecting sales to the tune of 400,000 units this year. If that happens, we can be quite sure that the Alto will become the largest selling car for the year 2011 as well.
“The K10 has been very well received and has been responsible for the growth that we witnessed last year. We are confident it will do even better this year,” said IV Rao, managing executive officer (engineering), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.
