Luxury Car Sales 2017: Mercedes-Benz Vs BMW Vs Audi Vs Jaguar Land Rover

Which luxury car maker sold most number of vehicles in India? We compile the sales performance of four major luxury car brands in India – Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Jaguar Land Rover

Mercedes-Benz India

Mercedes-Benz India has announced sales numbers for 2017, clocking 15,330 units in the January-December 2017 period, reporting a Y-o-Y growth of 16%. Globally, the brand sold 2,289,344 units growing by 10%. With these sales figures, Mercedes-Benz remains the leading global luxury car brand.

BMW Group (Including BMW Motorrad)

BMW Group India delivered 9,800 cars (BMW + MINI) in 2017, registering a growth of 25% as compared to 2016. BMW India sold 9,379 cars in 2017, clocking a notable growth of 25% as compared to 2016. In 2017, the BMW sales growth was predominantly driven by the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment, particularly the BMW X1 (compact SAV) and the BMW X5 (premium SAV). The second half of 2017 also saw an unprecedented acceleration in sales with the launch of the all-new BMW 5 Series.

MINI is leading the small-premium car segment in India with 421 MINIs hitting the road in 2017, a growth of 17% as compared to 2016.

In the first year of its operations in the country, BMW Motorrad has also created a strong appeal among Indian customers, delivering 252 motorcycles.

Audi

Audi, the German luxury car manufacturer, announced its annual deliveries in the Indian market for 2017 at 7,876 units. This year also marked the completion of ten years of the brand with four rings in India. 2017 was year of ‘Audi Reloaded’. The year saw 10 launches from the brand with the four rings including the Audi A3 Sedan, Audi A3 Cabriolet, Audi Q3, Audi A4 TDI, Audi Q7 40 TFSI, Audi A5, Audi A5 Cabriolet and Audi S5 amongst others.

Making the brand accessible has been Audi’s key focus – Audi India has overall 90+ customer touch points that include Showrooms, Workshops and Audi Used Car (Audi Approved Plus) facilities. With the ‘Workshop First’ strategy, the brand is chartering entry into tier 2 and tier 3 towns.

Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar Land Rover India announced a robust growth of 49 percent in volume for the calendar year 2017. With 3,954 units sold during this period, Jaguar Land Rover India reported a sterling performance, buoyed by a new and competitively priced model range, world-class retailer footprint and enhanced service and brand experience programs for consumers.

Contribution to this exceptional growth came from almost all model lines of Jaguar Land Rover, starting with the XE at INR 35.85 Lakh, followed by the XF, F-PACE, Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque that proved to be the most popular with customers across the length and breadth of the country. Demand also surged for the All-New Discovery, the top-of-the-line Range Rover Sport and the flagship of the Land Rover brand, the Range Rover.
