2024 Hyderabad Formula E Race Cancelled

The highly anticipated Formula E which was to be held in Hyderabad in 2024 scheduled for February 10, has officially been cancelled leaving motorsport enthusiasts disappointed

Formula E, the all-electric racing championship, confirmed the cancellation, citing concerns that rose after the recent state assembly elections in Telangana.

Breach of Contract Allegations

Formula E has hinted at pursuing legal action for a “breach of contract” by the Government of Telangana. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department (MAUD), under the government’s control, allegedly decided not to fulfill the Host City Agreement signed on October 30, 2023.

In an official statement, Formula E Operations (FEO) expressed disappointment, stating that it had no choice but to formally notify MAUD of the breach of contract. FEO is now contemplating its next steps under the Host City Agreement and applicable laws.

Background of the Hyderabad E-Prix

The inaugural Hyderabad E-Prix took place earlier this year, drawing an attendance of approximately 31,000. While the drivers praised the track, operational and infrastructure issues surfaced. Despite doubts about the event’s return, it was confirmed as part of the 2024 Formula E calendar in October.

However, complications arose as the organizing team behind the race disbanded in August. The change in governance in Telangana, with the Congress assuming command, further added to the uncertainties.

Disappointments Echoed

Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E, expressed deep disappointment for the extensive motorsport fanbase in India.

Longo highlighted the significance of hosting a world championship race and acknowledged the efforts of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) in bringing Formula E back to Hyderabad. The cancellation, he stated, was a letdown for both local and national fans.

Impact on Formula E Calendar

With the cancellation of the Hyderabad E-Prix, Formula E faces a reduced 15-race calendar for 2024. The absence of a replacement event leaves a notable gap of almost two months between the Diriyah E-Prix (January 26-27) and the Sao Paulo E-Prix (March 16).

A Setback for Motorsport Enthusiasts

The cancellation of the 2024 Hyderabad E-Prix marks a setback for motorsport enthusiasts in India. The breach of contract allegations adds a layer of complexity to the situation, and the absence of a replacement event further intensifies the disappointment.
