If you’re into two-stroke Yamaha motorcycles, you’re living in a glum era. More so if you stay in Bengaluru, where examples of the rebel-eyed Yamaha RX135 are changing hands at exorbitant prices. A Yamaha dealer in Bengaluru recently listed seven examples of the iconic Yamaha RX135 for auction, and each bike sold for around INR 1.5 lakh with the highest bid going to around INR 1.65 lakh.
The rise in value of these motorcycles can be associated with their relative rarity, as manufacturing of the Yamaha Rx 135 was stopped in 2005, when the Central government enforced stricter emission norms. While examples of the RX100 are dime a dozen, a well-maintained one still sells at a hefty premium. The RX135 is more rare, and coupled with its rebellious character, one in mint condition commands these stratospheric prices.
While the RX 135 5-speed was being produced from 1997 to 2005, it quickly became popular amongst drag racers across the country, with enthusiasts making generous usage of the 14 bhp and light weight. With on-road prices starting at INR 48,000 (back then), and a mileage of 35-40 kmpl, the bikes were very much in demand, especially among college-goers and youngsters.
Back to these seven motorcycles, they were lying idle at the dealership’s warehouse, as they were not getting registered because the road transport office had stopped registering new two-stroke bikes. Finally, with all the motorcycles registered after a round of court proceedings, the auction was publicized and received an overwhelming response, and lucky buyers beat long bidding queues to acquire their coveted Yamaha RX135.
