As you might have seen in some spy pictures, the next-gen Innova by Toyota, has already begun its road testing in India under a cloak of stealth. The Toyota Innova is the best-selling MPV in the country and it has earned it with credentials to prove. Reliable, spacious, comfortable and a decently powered diesel motor has given the Innova a massive fan-following. The current Innova comes in two engine avatars; a 2.0-litre petrol and a more popular 2.5-litre diesel motors. The latter has been the staple of this MPV ever since its launch, eons ago. The current oil-burner produces 101 bhp and 200 Nm of torque, all being channeled through a 5-speed manual tranny powering the rear wheels.

The best bit of news though, is that the new Innova will finally receive a new engine under its bonnet! After using the present 2.5-litre mill for the past million years, this popular MPV is finally set to be equipped with a brand-new 2.0-litre unit. This engine is set to produce more power and torque than the existing motor, and we presume it will also be cleaner and quieter. The 2-litre diesel motor is to chug out 120 horses and 310 Nm of twisting force to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. To make matters even sweeter, the next-gen car has gone through weight-reduction program and that means a mass shedding of around 80 kilogrammes. The resultant outcome of more power and lesser weight is going to be obvious, better performance and even more importantly, for the Indian customer, improved fuel-economy.

Toyota might equip the Camry and/or Corolla Altis with the same powerplant, but that is to be seen. Sticking with the Innova for now, it isn’t confirmed yet whether this popular MPV will be offered with an autobox in its next avatar or not. On the cost front, we cannot be absolutely sure whether there will be a increase in the sticker price for the newer and improved Innova, but even if so, it should only be incremental. The king of the MPV segment is set to make a grand re-entrance and this will only hot up the competition within the segment of people carriers. How excited are you about the upcoming Toyota Innova and do you think it will remain the reigning champion of the segment? Kindly let us know your opinions and we will only appreciate your comments and suggestions.
