CKD import of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport to commence in September 2012. Might become cheaper.

Some time back, we posted in detail about the recently launched Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV. The car has been introduced at a price of INR 23.53 lakhs ( ex-showroom Delhi). Our regular readers may remember that we talked about how Mitsubishi has fair chances of getting the better of Toyota if it prices this new car right. However, after looking at the recently announced price and the features on offer, it won’t be wrong to say that the pricing is far from being competitive. The Mitsubishi Outlander, which should soon get a price cut, is a slow selling model owing to lack of diesel and high asking price. Now, the Pajero Sport comes with a reasonably powerful diesel engine but high price might keep many away from the Mitsubishi dealerships. The reason for this high price is that the car comes via Completely Built Unit (CBU) route from Thailand and attracts high import duties.

However, there is a fair possibility that the good folks will be quick to slash the prices at the first available opportunity. Come September 2012 and the Pajero Sport will start being assembled in India as Mitsubishi will then import the CKD kits of this SUV. This simply means that the new car will see a 20-25% reduction in its price tag. This will also be the time when the grandpa Pajero SFX on sale in India will go out of production. We are now getting bored of saying that Mitsubishi is finally getting aggressive in Indian market. Recently, we saw a huge price cut on underrated yet capable Cedia sedan and Mitsubishi will soon launch a pocket friendly seven seater version of the Outlander. Keeping this in mind, it becomes even more probable that the Pajero Sport will become easier to buy and might give nightmares to the likes of Toyota Fortuner.
