At its product unveiling event ahead of the 2015 EICMA show, Ducati has managed to stun the world by unveiling as many as seven products, including new and updated motorcycles. Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali took the covers off the new products in a passionate, engaging presentation.

Of these, the new Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro takes Ducati into a world it has never ventured before – that of big, brawny, tough, cross-continent tourers. One might commit the mistake of thinking of the Enduro as a small spinoff of the Multistrada, but it’s a serious new product, and looks damn exciting.

The Multistrada 1200 Enduro represents Ducati’s entry into the maxi-enduro segment. Meant to take on any terrain, and built to go long distances, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is a full-optional bike for the uncompromising globetrotter.

Ducati says that the Enduro has been tested to the hilt, and been developed to handle the most difficult conditions. The new motorcycle features the Multistrada 1200 frame, modified with a new twin-sided swingarm.

Powering the motorcycle is the tried and tested 160 hp Ducati Testastretta DVT (Desmodromic Variable Timing) engine, now equipped with a new exhaust system. The Multistrada 1200 Enduro comes equipped with four riding modes Enduro, Touring, Sport and Urban.

The 1200 Enduro has been designed with the singular goal to handle on and off-road conditions with equal aplomb. Featuring spoked wheels – 19’’ at the front and 17’’ at the rear, the Enduro is designed to go off the road without any second thoughts. As a key hardware change, the Enduro features electronic semi-active Sachs suspension (front and rear). A massive 30-litre fuel tank ensures that the Multistrada 1200 Enduro will keep going on without refueling for up to 450km.

The new 1200 Enduro is high on electronics, as it is on the old world ruggedness, and features the full suite of Ducati’s electronic safety net. Biggest mentions would be the Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) and the semi-active Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) Evolution system, with 200 mm of wheel travel – and all of it is standard, not optional. Cornering ABS and Cornering Lights (DCL) are great inclusions, while Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) to aid uphill starts has been introduced for the very first time on a Ducati.

The changes over the Multistrada S include

  • A 30-litre tank
  • Off-road oriented side panels for free movement while riding the pegs
  • Off-road oriented seat
  • New suspension hardware and control software
  • High-exit exhaust to enable water wading
  • 200mm wheel travel
  • Off-road foot pegs and levers
  • 205mm ground clearance
  • Vehicle Hold Control
  • Aluminium radiator covers
  • 19” front – 17” rear wheels

  • Extended skid plate

Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro details

The Multistradas’s smart, sporty look has been modified with a whole bunch of off-road features. The electronics package features the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), developed by Bosch. The advanced sensor dynamically measures pitch and roll angles and acceleration along the 3 axes, to augment safety and performance.

Some other standard features on the Multistrada 1200 Enduro include electronic speed control and the Bluetooth module. Using the latter, via the Ducati Multimedia System (DMS), the rider can connect the motorcycle to a smartphone and manage key multimedia functions (incoming calls, text messaging, music) via the switchgears and display information on the TFT instrument console.

The new Multistrada Link App for iOS and Android provides access to a whole array of functions. The bike data can be received via Bluetooth, allowing the user to improve his riding, or just share it with friends.

The Multistrada 1200 Enduro is available in three different colours – Ducati Red, Phantom Grey and Star White Silk. Furthermore, Ducati will introduce a whole array of accessories to make it fully customizable to the needs of long distance riders. A beautifully designed aluminum luggage set was showcased at the unveiling.

The prices of the Multistrada 1200 Enduro start from £16,690 or about Rs 16.5 Lakh in Europe.

We feel extremely excited looking at that product. What about you? Do share your thoughts on the new product.
