We recently got a taste of Renault’s latest car for India – the Kwid. During the Kwid‘s world premiere event in Chennai, Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan Alliance confirmed the imminent arrival of Datsun’s Redi-GO. Ghosn said that the Redi-GO is slated to reach our shores during the second half of 2016. The Datsun Redi-GO will make its first appearance at the 2016 Auto Expo in New Delhi. Though the hatchback hits the Indian market next year, the car to be showcased at the upcoming Auto Expo wouldn’t be a production-ready unit. That’s because the Datsun Redi-GO is still an unfinished product for the carmaker.

The Redi-GO will borrow some SUV-like trades for a more rugged stance.

Datsun will base the Redi-GO on the CMF-A (Common Modular Family) platform. This underpinning will be shared with the Renault Kwid. Despite that similarity, Ghosn mentioned that the Datsun and Renault will look different. However, the Datsun Redi-GO will make use of the Kwid’s newly-developed 3-pot petrol engine and an identical 5-speed manual gearbox. We presume Datsun to launch the Redi-GO as a micro-SUV and that intent stands out in the concept car too. The concept also displayed high ground clearance, flared wheel arches, short overhangs. Expect Datsun to tone down the flamboyance of the concept in its final production unit. Having said that, an SUV-like high seating position is likely.

The Renault Kwid and Datsun Redi-GO will share the same platform, engine and gearbox.

The upcoming Datsun Redi-GO could also get an AMT gearbox later in its life. This transmission system is doing well in our market, so it wouldn’t be surprising to find one in the Redi-GO. The upcoming Datsun hatchback is to be priced at around INR 2.75 lakh. This means that this Datsun will clearly be less high-tech in the cabin. Nissan has good expectations from its Datsun brand in India, though that’s yet to bear fruit. Do you think the Datsun Redi-GO will change that. Would you buy the Redi-GO if it’s priced under INR 3 lakh? Let us know in the comments section.
