Hyundai has taken a very different step this time with a bold new concept that surely stands apart from its usual lineup. The new Hyundai Boulder Concept shows a strong focus on tough driving and outdoor use, something the brand has not explored much in recent years.
This concept was showcased at the New York International Auto Show and it gives a clear idea of what Hyundai is planning next for bigger and more rugged vehicles.
One big change is the base of the vehicle. Hyundai is working on a ladder frame platform, which is very different from its usual cars. This type of setup is stronger and used in proper off road SUVs.
The Boulder concept also hints at a future pickup truck and SUV for the US market.
Exterior and overall design
Design highlights
- Boxy shape with upright stance
- Art of Steel design theme
- Vertical split LED headlamps
- Front grille with multiple LED elements
- Large off road bumper with tow hooks
- Wide fenders and high ground clearance
- 37 inch tyres with strong road presence
- Roof rack with extra storage
- Safari style roof glass panels
From the side, it looks tough and wide. It also gets side steps and unique rear doors that open in the opposite direction. The rear section has many interesting ideas.
Rear highlights
- Side opening tailgate with dual hinge
- Full size spare wheel mounted outside
- Power drop down rear glass
- Extra lighting on roof
The design may remind you of SUVs like Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, but it still keeps its own look. The concept is finished in a Liquid Titanium shade, which adds to its strong appearance.

Inside the cabin
The cabin feels very different from typical modern SUVs. Instead of a big single screen setup, this one goes for a more functional layout with multiple small displays and physical controls.
Interior highlights
- Four small screens placed across the dashboard
- Full width head up display on the windscreen
- Physical buttons and knobs for key functions
- Dual tone seats with a rugged finish
- Large gear selector at the centre
- Multi layer dashboard with storage spaces
- Strong grab handles and tough materials
It also gets a smart off road system that guides the driver in real time while driving on tough roads.
Other useful touches include fold out tables and a raised centre console that separates driver and passenger space.

Future plans
Hyundai has also shared its future plans with this concept. This platform will first be used for a pickup around 2030, and later an SUV will follow.
Production and development will be handled entirely in the US. This will help Hyundai compete more strongly with models like Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado.
For now, this concept will not go into production, but it clearly shows the direction Hyundai wants to take. Hyundai is also working on a separate off road focused SUV for India by 2030.
