BMW 5 Series and i5 EV to get Different Wheelbases in India

BMW is set to introduce the traditional petrol and diesel variants, also an all-electric i5 model in different wheelbases in India this festive season

The Distinctive Wheelbases

One of the key changes about the upcoming BMW 5 Series lineup is the availability of distinct wheelbases for different variants. The petrol and diesel iterations are slated to come with a long wheelbase configuration and on the other hand, the electric i5 variant will feature a shorter wheelbase.

Specifications and Dimensions

The long-wheelbase version of the BMW 5 Series, currently a staple in the Chinese market comes with a length of 5,175mm, width of 1,900mm, and height of 1,520mmoffering ample room for occupants. Notably, its wheelbase measures 3,105mm, surpassing its standard counterpart by 110mm.

Conversely, the i5 EV will arrive in India with a standard wheelbase, optimizing maneuverability and agility without compromising on the BMW performance. While the physical dimensions may differ slightly, both variants stay true with the ethos of the BMW brand.

Manufacturing and Localization Strategies

In a strategic move aimed at maximizing market penetration and ensuring competitive pricing, BMW will locally assemble the long-wheelbase variants of the petrol and diesel models in India. This decision not only streamlines production processes but also enables the brand to effectively rival competitors like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Luxury and Comfort

Beyond the dimensions and wheelbase variations, the BMW 5 Series sets a new standard for luxury sedans with its opulent interior features. Rear-seat passengers are treated to an experience, courtesy of reclining seats, four-zone climate control, and leather upholstery. Furthermore an optional 31.1-inch display for entertainment, elevates the driving experience.

Powertrain Options and Performance

Under the hood, the BMW 5 Series offers a range of powertrain options. The petrol variant, designated as the 530Li, harnesses the prowess of a 255hp twin-turbocharged engine, complemented by 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Meanwhile, the i5 EV delivers exhilarating performance with a 340hp motor, propelled by an 81.2kWh battery pack, promising a remarkable range of 582km.

Launch Timeline and Market Competition

As the festive season approaches, the BMW 5 Series is poised to make a grand entrance into the Indian market, standing against formidable rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6. While the long-wheelbase variants aim to capture the luxury and comfort oriented market, the all-electric i5 looks to gather the attention of the enthusiasts while also demanding a premium over it’s ICE counterpart.
