Auto Sales in the country for December 2023

In December 2023, major players in the Indian automotive industry unveiled their sales figures, reflecting various trends and shifts in the market. Here is a brief look at all the sales figures from all the major players.

Maruti Suzuki Sales

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, experienced a 1.28% decline in sales, with a total of 1,37,551 units sold. This encompassed passenger vehicles (PVs), light commercial vehicles (LCVs), and supply to other OEMs. Despite a 6.45% year-on-year (YoY) decrease, Maruti Suzuki retained a significant market presence, selling 104,778 passenger vehicles in December.

Specifically, Maruti Suzuki saw a decline in various segments, including a 5.85% drop in domestic sales (110,667 units) and a 23% increase in overseas shipments, reaching 26,884 units. The utility vehicle (UV) segment witnessed notable growth, with 45,957 units sold compared to 33,008 units in the same period last year, solidifying Maruti Suzuki’s position as the leading UV manufacturer in India.

For the entire year of 2023, Maruti Suzuki reported 1,707,668 units in domestic sales and 269,046 units shipped overseas. Additionally, the ongoing fiscal year showed promising growth with an 8.54% increase in domestic sales compared to the previous fiscal period.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Sales

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) showcased a remarkable 46% rise in yearly sales, reaching 2.33 lakh units in 2023. This encompassed 2.21 lakh units sold domestically and 11,984 units exported. Models like Innova Hycross, Fortuner, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Innova Crysta were key contributors to this success. December 2023 witnessed a substantial surge with a 119% increase in total monthly sales, selling 22,867 units compared to 10,421 units in the previous year.

Honda Sales

Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) experienced growth in both domestic sales and exports, with a 12% increase in domestic sales (7,902 units) and a significant 170% rise in exports (3,749 units) compared to December 2022.

Hyundai India

Hyundai India achieved a monumental milestone by surpassing 6 lakh units in sales for CY 2023, marking a 10% growth with 42,750 units sold in December. Their 13 car models collectively contributed to a total of 7,65,786 units in 2023, reflecting a 9% increase from the previous year.

Tata Motors

In December 2023, Tata Motors exhibited sales figures of 76,138 units, marking a 4% year-on-year growth, a slight uptick from the 72,997 units dispatched to dealers in December 2022. Specifically, their passenger vehicle sales experienced a 9% increase year-on-year. Reaching 43,470 units in December 2023 compared to 40,043 units in December 2022.

Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, highlighted the consecutive growth trend. He cited CY23 as the third successive year with the highest-ever sales at approximately 5.53 lakh units. Additionally, the company noted a substantial 29% surge in electric passenger vehicle sales, totaling 5,006 units in December 2023 compared to 3,868 units in December 2022.

Tata Nexon Facelift 2023

Furthermore, Tata Motors reported a marginal 1% rise in total commercial vehicle dispatches within the domestic market. Recording 34,180 units last month compared to 33,949 units in December of the previous year.

Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra & Mahindra recorded an overall sales figure of 60,188 units in December 2023. Thus marking a 6% year-on-year growth in the domestic market. Notably, the Utility Vehicles segment saw a substantial 24% growth with 35,171 vehicles sold. Despite a decline in exports, Mahindra experienced a considerable increase in SUV and passenger vehicle sales between April and December 2023. With a 29% and 28% jump, respectively.

MG Motor India reported retail sales of 56,902 units for the 2023 calendar year. Thus marking an 18% growth compared to 2022. December 2023 specifically saw sales of 4,400 units, showcasing a 13% year-on-year growth. MG’s focus on both ICE and EV models contributed to its position as the second-largest EV player in the segment.
