Scorpio N Scores 5-Stars In G-NCAP Test

Mahindra makes a hat-trick with three of its SUVs scoring a full 5-star safety rating in the crash tests conducted by Global NCAP. This includes the XUV 300, the XUV 700, and now the new Scorpio N in the list of the homegrown automaker’s 5-star safety rating achievers. Mahindra’s Scorpio N was tested by the global car safety agency in its latest round of the #SafercarsforIndia mission. The tests were conducted under its newer, stringent & more demanding protocols.

The agency also crash-tested three other Indian-made cars along with the Scorpio N. Let us take a closer look at how the SUV fared in the stricter test. Notably, this makes Scorpio N the first body-on-frame SUV to achieve this feat. Earlier, Mahindra’s other body-on-frame vehicles like the Thar and Marazzo have received four-star safety ratings.

The Scorpio N received 29.25 points out of 34 points for adult occupant protection. As the norm, G NCAP used the base Z2 variant of the Scorpio for its frontal and side-impact test. This comes equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, a collapsible steering system, seatbelt pre-tensioners with load limiters, seat belt reminders, and ISOFIX child seat anchorage points. Although for the side pole impact test, a higher variant having six airbags was used.

In the frontal offset deformable barrier crash, the agency awarded the SUV 12.3 points. And, in the side movable deformable barrier test, it gave 16 points out of 17. While G NCAP has given out an ‘OK’ remark for the side pole impact test, the occupant’s chest region has been rated weak.

Lastly, the safety watchdog said that the bodyshell integrity and footwell of the Scorpio N were stable and could withstand further loadings.

Crash Test Results: Child Occupant Rating

The Mahindra SUV secured 28.93 points for child occupant protection out of a maximum of 49 points. This resulted in Global NCAP rating the car with three stars which is fairly average. For the crash test, an 18-month and a 3-year-old dummy were placed in rear-facing child seats with supports. The seats successfully avoided head exposure during the frontal as well as the side-impact crash test.

However, the lack of rear three-point seatbelts affected the child occupant rating limiting it to three stars. Compared to this, Mahindra’s other SUVs like the Thar and XUV 700 have scored four stars in child occupant rating, though that was under the older assessment protocols.

About The Scorpio N

Being the automaker’s latest offering, the Scorpio N has been well-received by buyers as the SUV clocked a massive number of bookings on its launch day. Mahindra had voluntarily sent the car to Global NCAP’s testing center just like it did in the case of the XUV 700. This reflects the SUV maker’s commitment towards the safety of its vehicles.
