The first thing that catches your eye on the Norton Manx R is not a huge wing or a long list of graphics. It is the shape of the motorcycle. The bodywork looks clean, the mechanical parts are easy to see and the bike has a strong road presence. That design has now earned Norton a Bronze award at the 2026 International Design Excellence Awards.
The Manx R was recognised in the Automotive and Transportation category at the IDEA Awards, organised by the Industrial Designers Society of America. The award was collected by Darren McNeill, Head of Marketing at Norton US, at the ceremony in Pasadena, California.
A rare award for a petrol motorcycle
The recognition is important for the Manx R because very few motorcycles have received an IDEA award during the programme’s 45 year history. Norton says the Manx R is the first production combustion engined sports motorcycle to receive the award.
It is also the first combustion engined motorcycle to receive an IDEA recognition since 2015.
The award also says a lot about the design path chosen for the Manx R. The bike does not depend on a busy appearance. Its main design details include:
- Clean body surfaces
- Exposed mechanical components
- Controlled proportions
- Strong and muscular stance
- Minimal use of racing graphics
- Reduced visual clutter
- Carbon fibre bodywork
- Large 8 inch TFT display
- Modern rider focused layout
- A clear connection between form and function
Design led by Norton team
The Manx R was created as the flagship model of Norton’s new generation of motorcycles. Simon Skinner, Head of Design at Norton, led the design work with the company’s design and engineering teams.
Professor Gerry McGovern OBE, Norton’s Chief Creative Advisor, also played an important role in shaping the brand’s new design direction.
Norton says the Manx R follows four main design ideas: modernity, integration, drama and rider connection. The motorcycle has been designed to give its technical parts a visible role instead of hiding everything behind body panels.
More than just styling
The Manx R is not only about its appearance. It uses an all new V4 engine and comes with semi active suspension, Brembo brakes and advanced rider assistance systems.

The Manx R is part of Norton’s Resurgence plan under TVS Motor Company ownership. The frame, carbon fibre bodywork, TFT display and 1,200cc V4 engine are manufactured in India, with the final motorcycle assembled at Norton’s Solihull facility in the UK.
Norton has also confirmed that the Manx R and Atlas adventure motorcycle are scheduled to go on sale in the US from October 2026. Prices have not been announced yet.
