Renault showcased its Zoe electric car at the 2014 Auto Expo. The Zoe joins the Fluence saloon, Kangoo van and Twizy to become the fourth all-electric car in Renault’s line-up internationally. The Zoe also features Renault’s new brand identity, including the new front face.
The Zoe boasts a zero emissions powertrain, well-equipped interior and decent performance at an affordable price. The ZOE’s range is about 160 km with mixed driving. Most of all, it’s a practical car which doesn’t burn a big hole in your pocket for going eco friendly.
Based on the Clio platform, the Zoe boasts some neat touches like the blue detailing in the head and tail-lights, and the blue tint to the windows. Inside, the centre console is carried over from the Clio with a TFT screen replacing the dials to show the car’s range.
The ZOE is powered by an electric motor that develops 87bhp in normal mode, and 60bhp in Eco mode. However, the 220Nm of torque available from 0 rpm makes the Zoe a quick car from slow to medium speeds. Top end is nothing too great to write home about though.
The heavy batteries located under the Zoe’s floor are the primary reason for its heavy 1400kg kerb weight. Boot space is 338 litres.
While still not on sale in India, the Zoe represents what Renault is capable of with its electric technology. The Zoe is one of the most affordable and practical all-electric cars in the world, and is an apt showcase of Renault’s eco-sensibilities.
