The new 2014 Mahindra Scorpio has been launched today and is priced attractively between Rs 7.98 lakh for the base S2 variant and Rs 11.46 lakh for the top-end S10 variant, (Prices, Ex-showroom, Mumbai). In comparison to the older model, the new Scorpio loses some of its curves and in it’s refreshed avatar, looks angular and bold when viewed head-on. Moving side-ways, the home grown SUV retains its familiar looks and not much has changed, except the design of the alloy wheels. At the rear though, those vertically stacked tail-lights are now LED units, while there is an applique that surrounds the licence plate area on the rear tail-gate. Bumpers now feature reflectors and although the SUV has undergone a few cosmetic changes, it retains that signature look and cannot be mistaken for anything else, but a Mahindra Scorpio.
Powering the new Scorpio are the same 2.5 litre m2Dicr and the 2.2 litre MHawk engines. While the former is a 4-cylinder, 2.5 litre, turbo charged CRDI engine which makes 75 bhp at 3200 rpm and 200 Nm of torque between 1400 – 2200 rpm, it will only be available in the S2 base variant. The mHawk engine on the other hand will be available in four variants – S4, S6, S6+ S8 and S10. It continues to be a 2179 cc, 4-cylinder, CRDI unit and is boosted by a variable geometry turbocharger with an intercooler. It is rated for 120 bhp at 4000 rpm and 280 Nm of torque between 1800 – 2800 rpm. A brand new addition is an optional on-the-fly 4X4 system, however, the Mahindra Scorpio will only be available with a 5-speed manual gearbox for now. The new Scorpio promises a higher fuel efficiency figure of more than 15 kpl, which is a good figure by SUV standards.
The refreshed Scorpio is based on the new W105 3rd generation platform, which will be used for all future body-on-frame vehicles. Being a modular platform it gives Mahindra the flexibility to build an extended wheelbase or a sub-4 metre vehicle around it. The new Scorpio is the first vehicle to be based on this platform and future products like the Bolero, Xylo, and Quanto replacements will also share the same. The platform is wider than the predecessor and uses an anti-roll bar, which was missing in the older gen Scoprio. Mahindra has worked hard to provide a stiffer chassis and claims double the amount of stiffness in comparison old gen Scorpio chassis. It should also mean that body roll and vertical movement experienced in the older car should’ve reduced by a large extent in this new vehicle.
The area where the most amount of transformation has happened is the cabin. The interior is finished in various hues of grey and blue, AC vents are horizontal and the Scorpio also gets premium kit from the XUV 500, like a climatronic system, an infotainment unit that supports navigation and thankfully, the Scorpio can be bought with an optional safety package, which includes ABS, twin airbags and is available across all the 5 variants. The new platform also remains future proof and will comply with any crash norms which might be introduced in the new Motor Vehicle Act in India, as well as complying with safety regulations in international markets.
