With bodywork that could shame a Lamborghini Reventon with its sheer number of intersecting, angular surfaces, this Chinese super-SUV wants you to forget the Hummer H1 that you were ogling at the other day, or even the king-sized Dartz models from Russia. It’s called the Karlmann King, and made by Beijing based IAT Automobile Technology using Ford F-450 pick-up underpinnings. Look away already, lest your corneas get lacerated by the matte black sharpness of the exteriors.
The entire design is a cluster of triangular and diamond shaped elements; including the windows.
The interiors are familiar to a 2014 Ford F-150’s insides, although in typical Chinese fashion, there are gold accents everywhere, which, along with Alcantara and wood trimming make the Karlamann’s cabin feel gaudier than your average Bentley. The Karlmann seats four, with the rear passengers getting spoilt with a Rolls-Royce inspired ‘Starlight’ headliner, tablet holders, a fridge and even matching teacups in different sizes.
Power for the Karlmann comes from Ford’s 6.8-liter Triton V10 petrol engine, good for 362 hp. IAT says that it will build 10 examples of the Karlmann, each carrying a mind-numbing price tag of 12 million RMB or about INR 12.7 Crores, going at today’s exchange rates!
