Popular Austrian bike maker KTM, wherein our Bajaj Autos Ltd holds a considerable stake, has won a lot of accolades for the Freeride E, the bike maker’s electric powered, non-polluting off-road motorcycle. We reported in detail when KTM recently came up with the E-Speed, a new electric vehicle concept vehicle based on the Freeride E’s battery and powertrain concept. With the E-Speed, KTM launched a non polluting EV for use in urban areas. We now have some more details on the E-Speed’s motor and battery.

Stefan Pierer (KTM CEO): “We at KTM are completely convinced of electric mobility as a perfect complement to conventional powertrains. In the long term, the electric drive will come out on top for short distances – particularly in areas which are highly sensitive from an environmental perspective, like open nature and densely populated metropolitan areas! Vehicles like the ‘E-SPEED’ and FREERIDE E can help powered two-wheelers win back more acceptance in society. Not just because of their environmental credits, but because they are easy to use, quick, and simply great fun.”

The E-Speed prototype is fuelled by a battery pack that bestows it with a decent torque of 36Nm and a top speed of 85kmph. Other cool bits include the WP suspension parts.

All the juice from the battery pack is utilized by a liquid-cooled, permanent-magnet synchronous motor that has a permanent power of 11kW. The power is transferred to the rear wheel thru a belt drive. The battery pack consists of a set of new age lithium-ion batteries that have a capacity of 4.36kWh on full charge. The E-Speed can be charged within two hours using a regular 220V socket.

Thanks to the competent chassis and suspension elements, the KTM E-Speed does have some sporting ambitions.
