In the last few weeks, the Tata Nano has been the ‘burning’ topic in the media. With the entire buzz around, it has been observed that the sales of the Tata Nano has dropped by a whopping 47 percent. Tata Motors managed to sell around 2,936 units in September 2011 as compared to 5,250 units in the same month last year. In August 2011, the firm sold only 1,202 units of the Tata Nano which measures to a fall of 85 percent on sales as compared to the sales of August 2010.

On the other hand, Tata Motors sold a total of 27,137 units (26,319 Tata + 818 Fiat) of passenger vehicles in September 2011 which turns out to be a growth of 6 percent as compared to last year’s 25,527 units (23,877 Tata + 1,650 Fiat) sold. Considering the 26,319 unit sales of only Tata Motors, the firm has managed a growth of 10 percent in September 2011.

A company spokesperson claimed that the fall in the sales of Tata Nano was caused due to the two weeklong shutdown of the Sanand plant. “This (suspension of production) was done for maintenance and to rationalize and align inventory,” he said. The Tata Nano bears the tag of the world’s cheapest car. However, the sales of the car do not match to the tag given to the car. However, the recent involvement in the fire incidents may also have affected the sales of the Tata Nano.
