Tata Motors showcased a series of its upcoming products, including concept cars, future EVs & also CNG versions of its existing models at this year’s Auto Expo which was held in Noida.
Additionally, the brand also confirmed that they’re making a new generation of direct injection 1.2L and 1.5L turbo petrol engines. These two new turbocharged gasoline direct injection (TGDi) petrol engines in the Tata Motors family will debut on the Curvv & Sierra and will also be powering the likes of the new petrol version of the Safari, Nexon, and Altroz.
About Tata’s New Engines
Both of the turbo-petrol motors are compliant with the BS6 Phase 2 emission norms, i.e., Read Driving Emission norms (RDE).
The new engines are built using lightweight aluminium and are stiffer in construction. Apart from being punchier, these engines are also said to be more refined and fuel efficient. Tata has made the engines capable of running on E20 fuel, which is a blend of petrol with 20% ethanol.
The engines feature stuff like Dual cam passing, variable oil pump, and integrated exhaust in the cylinder head which provides great fuel economy, and a water-cooled turbocharger for excellent low-end torque delivery.
Mohan Savarkar, Product Line Vice President at Tata Motors, has hinted that these new turbo-petrol engines could be offered mated to a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). According to Tata, the consumable components of the engine like the timing chain and valvetrain have been developed with a lower maintenance cost & long-term reliability as the focus.
1.2 TGDi Engine: Specs
The 1.2-litre, three-cylinder motor displaces 1,198cc 125PS of power at 5,000rpm and 225Nm of torque between 1,700 and 3,500rpm. But in other, smaller vehicles, it’ll deliver a lower torque output of 190Nm.
Tata will introduce this new turbo-petrol engine on the Curvv coupe-SUV in 2024, which debuted in concept form at Auto Expo 2023. The engine will also be offered in the Nexon and Altroz later on.

Unlike the 1.2-l unit, the larger 1.5 TGDi direct injection turbo-petrol engine is a four-cylinder unit displacing 1,498cc. It is good for giving out a healthy 170hp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,500rpm.
This motor will initially be offered on the automaker’s upcoming Sierra, as it will debut on the new SUV. But later, the Harrier & Safari would also come with this powertrain with both automatic and manual gearbox options.
