Honda Brio Amaze Review

Honda Brio Amaze Review, Specs, Images, Launch & Video

Japanese auto maker giant Honda recently invited some of our friends for a short drive of the upcoming Honda Brio Amaze at Japan. It may be noted that the Brio-based 2013 Honda Amaze is slated to be launched in Thailand on 23rd this month and the India launch should happen in January 2013. In India, Honda Brio Amaze will become the first Honda car to sport a diesel engine and will go up against the high selling Maruti Suzuki Dzire.

Here is a compilation of Honda Brio Amaze reviews from some renowned Indian auto journalists:

AutocarIndia Editor Hormazd Sorabjee tweets, “Just drove Honda Amaze – its truly amazing! 1.5 diesel incredibly responsive & refined. Rear seat shocking spacious. Honda’s back and how!

It may be noted that the 1.5 litre Earth Dreams iDTEC diesel engine on duty in the Honda Brio Amaze is closely related to the highly publicized 1.6 litre i-DTEC motor from the car maker. Also, the smaller oil burner was developed along with the bigger sibling. The new motor is Euro 4 compliant.

Honda has refrained from revealing the power figures but we do have come to know that the max. torque output is pegged at 200Nm and the engine is mated to a five speed manual gearbox. This means that the Honda 1.5 iDTEC has only marginally more torque than the 1300cc Fiat Mulitjet that powers many cars in India. The Honda Brio Amaze tips the scales at 1,050kgs.

The Amaze will be available with a petrol engine as well. No prizes for guessing which engine will be propelling it though. Yep, the 1.2 liter i-VTEC with 90PS and 110Nm currently powering the Jazz and the Brio. The engines will initially be mated to a 5-speed manual tranbsmission, with auto options following at a later date. Like the Brio hatchback, the Brio Amaze compact sedan too will be available in auto variant. It will  be the same 5 speed automatic transmission that does duty on the Brio Auto hatchback.

As is being reported, the motor has been well tuned and doesn’t really suffers from turbo lag. However, it has also emerged that Honda needs to work a bit on the NVH levels.

NDTVProfit’s Car&Bike Show presenter Siddharth Patankar too has similar thoughts.

Had a peek at Amaze’s boot & engine bay. Good layout on latter. Boot – wow! Will swallow big luggage. Dzire beware again!”

“ Engine bit noisy, 5 speed gearbox well mated. No need for freq gear changes. Good city driving character.

Some other pointers that we have come to know from our friends are:

Good low and mid end punch.

Engine suited to both city and highway driving.

The gear changes could have been more smooth.

It is being estimated that the motor will  have a power output of around 80PS.

Honda is claiming that the new 1.5 Liter i-DTEC all aluminum engine is the lightest in its class.

The Amaze Sedan also scores highly on the interior space and is roomier than the Dzire.

Design

As can be seen, the front isn’t unlike the Honda Brio hatchback. The rear though, seems to be neatly crafted and hence, the car won’t look as oddball as, say, the last gen Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.

The designers have surely done a neat job in transforming the hatchback into a sedan. The car looks all poised to replicate the success of Honda City and the carmaker seems to have got the styling very right.

On the inside, the car continues to be similar to the Brio hatchback and comes draped in full beige upholstery.

As can be made out from the pics, Honda has done a great job with increasing the rear leg space and the sculpted front seats that have been carried over from the hatchback should make the deal even sweeter with good knee recess.

Launch

The Brio sedan, nay, the Amaze will hit Thai market on November 23 and this means that we are very close to obtaining the official images and specs. The Honda Brio Amaze will come to India in January 2013.

A starting price of INR 5.25 lakhs can be safely expected for the base petrol variant.
