Honda Amaze Diesel To Be Discontinued

The Indian auto industry lost a ton of its products or powertrains thanks to the BS6 emission norms. The regulations that kicked in in April 2020, were just phase 1 of the transition and phase 2 is set to be brought in from April 2023.

From April 2023, cars should meet BS6 emission norms in RDE (Real Driving Emission) conditions along with complying with MIDC lab conditions.

Discontinuation Of The Amaze Diesel

Honda has silently removed details & prices of the Amaze’s diesel variants from its official website. The move is a part of Honda’s strategy to focus on petrol and hybrid powertrains in the Indian market going forward.

The Japanese automaker had introduced the Amaze facelift back in August 2021. There were 4 diesel variants on offer at launch, with prices ranging from Rs. 8.67 lakh to Rs. 11.15 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-spec CVT trim. The Amaze diesel was powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel motor that churned out 99 BHP and 200 Nm of torque.

Going forward, the Amaze will be available with the 1.2-litre petrol only. It develops 89 BHP and 110 Nm and comes paired with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT.

The facelift Amaze comes with a revised chrome grille, among other cosmetic updates. The car is equipped with features like LED projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and cruise control.

What is RDE?

BS6 phase II is described as Real Driving Emission (RDE). This new norm requires vehicles to have an onboard self-diagnostic device that will monitor real-time driving emission levels.

This RDE device will constantly monitor parts like catalytic converter and oxygen sensors to ensure that they are meeting the emission standards. The implementation of the RDE is the key reason for the discontinuation of Amaze Diesel. The i20 diesel has also been sacked by Hyundai owing to RDE.

Why?

Upgrading the Amaze’s diesel engine to meet the new stringent emissions regulations will be a costly affair. And that, put together with the low demand for diesel-powered cars in this segment makes the manufacturers discontinue their diesel counterparts.

The compact sedan rivals the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, and Tata Tigor in the segment, all of which lost their diesel engines sometime over the last three years.
