Next generation Maruti Gypsy

Is This How The Next-Generation Maruti Gypsy Will Look Like?

Now that the Maruti Gypsy has hung up its boots (Safari replaces Maruti Gypsy for Indian Army : Good or Bad?), we wonder if Maruti Suzuki will build its replacement model or not. Word has it that the company is considering getting the Jimny SUV to India, and ideally, that should be the spiritual successor to the Gypsy.

But what if Maruti builds its own Gypsy sometime in the future? Indian Autos Blog‘s latest render predicts just that by imagining how the next-generation Maruti Gypsy could look like. The render preserves the Gypsy’s butch looks, infusing it with some old-world charm while at it.

The boxy shape has been retained, but it looks like the compact footprint has grown somewhat. The fascia makes use of elements from modern day Suzuki vehicles. So while the headlamps are from the Ignis (albeit a bit morphed to fit the render), the grille is from the Vitara.

The A- and B-pillars have been blacked out, while the doors bear exposed hinges as a throwback to the original Gypsy’s doors. Big, chunky wheel arches host off-road tires at each corner, while a clam-shell bonnet, skid plates and roof rails round off the true-blue SUV appearance.

The original Gypsy draws power from a 1.3-litre, fuel injected petrol engine good for 80 bhp and 103 Nm of torque. The engine’s mated to a 5-speed MT, while power is sent to all four wheels (wrapped with AT rubber) using a basic 4WD system with low range.

You are free to put the engine of your choice in this virtual render, as long as it fits. The next-generation Maruti Gypsy, if made, will rival the likes of the Mahindra Bolero Power+.

  1. This looks like an ignis high lift and resembles the Toyota fj cruiser a bit in terms of the shape. I’d any day prefer this with the 1.3 ddis engine with some bigger turbo and more power.
