The world is busy getting greener. At least, that is what many are trying. Joining the likes of environmentally aware, Indian car giant Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. now wishes to become more environment friendly. The manufacturer plans to do this by reducing the emissions of greenhouse gas from its cars and by lowering carbon footprint in manufacturing facilities. This is not all as the car maker will also invest in new environment-friendly technologies.

Mr. Shinzo Nakanishi, MD and CEO, Maruti Suzuki said: “We have a well thought-out plan to minimise resource use, to become a greener company and safeguard the environment. As we expand our business and put in newer facilities, our focus will be to adopt and invest in new environment friendly technologies and practices to minimize the impact of our business on the environment”.

Here are some of the steps that MSIL has already taken towards becoming greener:

  • Usage of 100% LED in  Manesar at Plant B facility.
  • Using natural gas to generate power and minimise carbon emission.
  • Installing steam-driven system to generate power. This system uses steam from the waste heat recovered from gas turbines.
  • Using solar power for street lighting and water heating.

The power consumption for manufacturing a car has already come down by almost 30% in the last decade at the carmaker’s Gurgaon facility.

Talking about the cars, the new DZire and the new Swift now emit almost 5 per cent lesser emissions per kilometre.
