Piaggio is fast getting serious about the rapidly growing automatic scooter segment. While Kinetic can safely be said to be one of the first automatic scooters in the country, it has to be the Honda Activa which set the popularity of this segment soaring.

Piaggio, which until very recently used to be known for selling three wheelers in India, launched the retro styled Vespa LX 125 in our market last year. While the premium pricing of the very tasty scoot has not gone down too well with the market, the LX125 has turned out to be a great brand building product and has enabled Piaggio India to get a foothold in the automatic scooter segment.

Now, it has emerged that the LX125 isn’t the only weapon in Piaggio India’s arsenal and the Italian auto maker plans to launch two more Vespa scooters in our two wheeler market.

One of these is the Vespa S150 which will, in all probability, sport features like a front disc brake and fuel injection. The second new launch will be that of the Piaggio Typhoon 150 which will cater to the moto-scoot segment and will be a performance-oriented offering.

Not much is known about the India spec S150 and Typhoon 150. However, speculations are afloat that the Vespa S150 will offer a 12 PS, 150cc single cylinder four-stroke engine and the scooter will sport a telescopic front shock absorbers, front disk-brake, a semi digital speedo console and fuel injection.

The Vespa S150 is being expected to have a real world top speed figure of 100 kmph and will be among the fastest scooters in the country. The second offering, the Typhoon 150 with its SOHC 150cc engine, will have a 11.8 PS of power and 11.4 nm of peak torque. This scooter too will have a top speed of around 100 kmph.
