Auto Expo 2016 : Toyota’s eclectic mix of Hybrid, Fuel cell and everyday cars dazzles the show

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, representing its parent company Toyota Motor Corporation, which is a global leader in automobiles, had a fantastic lineup of mainstream, hybrid, fuel cell and racing vehicles at its exhibit. In addition to its production lineup of cars in India including the Etios, Etios Liva, Etios Cross and Corolla Altis, the car maker also brought in the very best from its world renowned portfolio of green technology cars at the 2016 Auto Expo.

The globally acclaimed Toyota SUV range, including the Fortuner, Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser 200 were also displayed at the show. The showstealer, however, from a market interest perspective was the new Innova Crysta, which is slated for a launch soon and expected to carry on the legendary legacy of its forerunner, the Innova.  Let’s have a look at the highlights of the Toyota exhibit at 2016 Auto Expo.

New Toyota Innova Crysta

Toyota Kirloskar Motor unveiled the all-new Innova Crysta for the Indian market at the 2016 Auto Expo. Slated for a national launch in the coming months, the Innova Crysta, withits all-new styling looks more contemporary than ever.

The front end styling features chrome laden slats, large, wraparound headlamps with a set of three, neatly segmented illumination elements comprising projectors and LED lights. The rear quarter glass area, is diagonally cut by the D-pillar adding some drama to the sides. At the back, the new, horizontally oriented brake light units on the new cluster, tapering mildly inwards look pretty cool. Other exterior highlights include three new colors, 17-inch alloy wheels, and chrome window lining.

The interiors are also all-new, combining straight lines and well contoured curves. The new dashboard design looks fab, with a choice of classy faux silver or faux wood inserts. The Innova Crysta will come with features like automatic climate control with rear auto cooler, 7″ touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, cruise control, power driver seat, 1-touch tumble 2nd row seats, 1-touch 3rd row space up seats, front seat with easy slide from rear and a smart entry system with Start/ Stop Button.

Powering the new Innova Crysta will be a new 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder diesel engine from Toyota’s new GD family with close to 150 hp and 340 Nm of torque. The engine will be mated to an optional 6-speed auto transmission as an option. Safety features on offer include standard airbags, ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist standard on all grades.

All New Prius

The original Hybrid, and the champion of environment consciousness, theAll New 2016 Toyota Prius has been revealed to the Indian audience here at the Auto Expo. The new gen Prius has evolved over the years, and has been tested to go upto 40 km on a litre of fuel in its newest avatar. The current model is powered by a 1.8-Liter, 4-cylinder, VVT-i engine that offers EV, ECO, and POWER modes. The petrol engine makes 95 hp at 5200 rpm and 142 Nm of torque at 3600 rpm, in conjunction with the AC synchronous motor with 71 hp and 163 NM of twist the system is good for a combined output of 121 hp of power.

Interior features include a Smart-flow climate control system with pollen filtration, a 6.1-inch touch-screen display, AM/FM CD player, six speakers, advanced voice recognition, a moonroof,a 4.2-in. color dual Multi-Information Display (MID) with customizable screens that displaythings like Energy Monitor, Hybrid System Indicator and Eco Score. The system also gets Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, Eco Wallet, Eco Diary and navigation system content. Lights all round are LED units.

A Qi compatible wireless charging system, a sonar assisted parking support system, colour HUD and a lot of other wizardry comes as standard with the Prius. Not to mention, buyers by default do their bit for the environment.

Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Vehicle

If the Prius pioneered green vehicle technology, the Mirai (meaning future in Japanese), takes it to the next level. The Toyota Mirai is one of the first hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles to be sold commercially, and has brought the cutting edge fuel cell technology closer to everyday usage than ever.

The Mirai is a fruition of Toyota’s fuel cell research and testing for more than twenty years.The Mirai offers one of the cleanest alternatives to the traditional internal combustion engines, while also providing world-class safety. The Mirai is powered by a fuel cell which generates electricity from a chemical reaction between atmospheric Hydrogen and Oxygen. When operating, the vehicle emits only water and there are no emissions of CO2 or substances of environmental concern.

Under the USEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2016 model year Mirai has a total range of 502 km on a full tank. The car delivers a staggering fuel efficiency of 27.77 kmpl making it the most fuel efficient hydrogen fuel cell vehicle rated by the EPA, and the one with the largest range.

Toyota TS040 Hybrid

In addition to its road going machines, Toyota also showcased its prowess in hybrid technology on the racetrack with the TS040 Hybrid race car. The Toyota TS040 Hybrid race car is entirely built around a hybrid power train. With an effective engine capacity of 3700 cc and a combined horsepower of 986 bhp, the TS040 won the World Championship at the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship.

The Le Mans Prototype (LMP1) machine’s complete bodywork is done in carbon fibre composite material with a polycarbonate windscreen. The engine is mated to a 7 speed sequential unit, running a ZF-supplied multidisc clutch. With a length of 4650 mm and width and height of 1900 mm and 1050 mm respectively, the TS040 looks absolutely stunning in the flesh!

THUMS – the champion of road safety

For promoting road safety and creating awareness about the subject among adults and children, Toyota also had life size figures of its computer based virtual human models, known as THUMS, at the 2016 Auto Expo. THUMS help the crash test engineers at Toyota to analyze and simulate situations that are closer to the actual accident.

Toyota analyzes crash simulations involving THUMS to pinpoint precisely which parts of the human body are affected by various high-impact collisions. The obtained data is used to develop airbags and seats that help reduce injuries in certain collision scenarios. THUMS consists of bone structure, ligaments and tendons to replicate human bodies.
