So, you have around INR 1.4 lakhs to throw around on a motorcycle, but you’re not bitten by the Royal Enfield bug yet. It’s simple. You put your money down on the new Bajaj Dominar 400.

It’s almost a no-brainer isn’t it? Because the Bajaj flagship’s got more power; heaps of it over the Royal Enfield Classic 350, and is definitely a more capable performer; both in the city and on the highway.

It’s even got modern tech like LED headlamps, ABS, a rear disc brake and a slipper clutch, while managing to look pretty neat as well, especially in white.

But not so fast. Royal Enfield has a cult following, and it’s there for a reason. The riding experience at certain speeds is unmatched, and the retro futuristic looks are certainly worth a second look.

They also sound like nothing else on the road, with their characteristic thump reverberating off the concrete jungle or even through the woods making for a cool, greatest hits album of ‘sound of freedom’.

If you’re a hardcore Royal Enfield fanatic, you’d rather not look anywhere else. But if you’re not, but still an open-minded RE lover, the Dominar 400 does look like a tantalizing buy.

On the flip side, both brands don’t exactly have the best reputation when it comes to being reliable. Also, the Royal Enfield vibrates like a humming bird’s wings.

So which one would you rather go for if you’re in the market?

To begin with, these machines do not have anything in common and belong to two entirely different segments.  C350 is an endurance cruiser and D400 is an entry-level feature packed sports bike. The only similarity is in terms of price range. Hence, comparison makes no sense.

Unless and until you have an strong passion for Royal Enfield bikes, Dominor always stands above RE always in all means even though its a entry-level bike. Few pros to name are ABS, feature-rich instrument cluster(C350 doesnt even have a fuel meter) LED headlights etc…

The only Bajaj I have ridden a lot is the Chetak. But that’s a Vespa, not a Bajaj. The Dominar is a frame with a KTM engine (with a Bajaj cylinder head). The Bullet has no power, no top speed, sounds like a diesel autorickshaw. I’d pick the Dominar for the modern engine and short-term reliability.

Dominar any day! Modern, practical, packed with usable features at an unbeatable price tag.  Add to that, the low maintenance cost that bajaj bikes offer. Who can beat that VFM?

Dominar… it’s a no-brainer. Only the hardcore RE fan (most of whom blindly admire RE as result of heard mentality) will opt for a RE.

Firstly, if I in particular have no options against these two, I would, any fine consider the Dominar.
But, if there would have been Thunderbird under comparison, there would have been an entirely different.
And if there is ample time, I would however like to wait for the Apache/Akula 300.

Any one who is not a fanboy of Royal Enfield will buy a dominar. Modern, safe, well equipped and far far reliable than the thumber. We wont get anythin better than this at that price tag now! Thanks to Bajaj for always bringing the techs to indians (started with disc brakes, digital meter,… and brought KTM and Kawasaki for us Indians and finally D400)

There is absolutely no comparison between the two- the Dominar wins it hands down and if given a go will chomp the RE for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For someone who loves motorcycling and appreciates good engineering and tech, it would be the Dominar anyday. The Dominar can do everything which an RE can by a way long margin and with better etiquettes- except ahem, the thump that catches the fancy of RE lovers which I feel has been becoming a nuisance with increased RE sales off late.

But if personally I had to make a choice, I would still wait and see how the Dominar holds up in a year’s time. Bajaj products are known to have teething issues in the first batch and the premature ageing of their motorcycles is another bothering factor. But if I am forced to make a spot decision- I’d take the Dominar home.
