Yamaha unveils 2013 Vixion or the cut price R15 at Jakarta – images, specs and all the details

Yamaha have introduced an all-new, 2012 version of its Vixion 150 motorcycle at the Jakarta Motorcycle Show. The bike, in essence is a cut-price R15 with most of the fairing taken away and power output not as high as its fully faired sibling. In its 2013 avatar, the Vixion (or V-Ixion) features an all-new body design. The headlamp, the profile, the rear panels, even the wheels have been given a thorough makeover.

The design of the bike, according to the officials at Yamaha Indonesia has been inspired from the YZF-R1, with the tank seemingly having been influenced the most. The earlier Vixion’s Deltabox frame was painted in silver, Yamaha have done this one’s in black. The headlight, tail-lamp and the fenders too are a departure from the earlier Vixion’s design. The front heavy, muscular design of the bike adopts some curves in the middle and tapers down by the end for a sporty, forward biased stance. The sporty muffler has purportedly been designed to reflect the sportiness of the R1. The yellow painted rear shock absorber and the red pinstriped rear wheel also add to the sporty appeal.

While great changes have been made to the visuals of the bike, the engine and the transmission essentially remain the same. Powering the Vixion is the same 150cc liquid cooled engine that powers the R15, albeit with lower power output. The engine boasts technology such as diasil cylinder and forged piston for enhanced performance. The 4-stroke, 4 valve, SOHC, liquid-cooled engine is capable of generating power up to 15 bhp at 8500 rpm with peak torque of 13.1 Nm at 7,500 rpm.

While the engine and transmission have not been altered, the ECU has witnessed some alterations. The Vixion  employs a new computer chip, as well a new, 33 pin diagnostics port for better error analysis. The bike also features a new, more efficient fuel pump and an overglow control aperture in the fuel lid.

Surprisingly, in its new 2013 avatar, the V-ixion is heavier than the biker it replaces. One of the reasons for the increase is the bigger, wider rear tyre which is now 120/70. The bike also features rear disc brakes for enhanced stopping power. The swing arm has been strengthened, and the bike now employs a box-type swing-arm.
Available color schemes for 2013 Vixion include – red white, black red, solid black and champagne gold. The specifications of the bike remain unchanged, but the difference in weight and wider tyres may actually affect its performance slightly.

Only yesterday we told you about the Honda CB150R Streetfire, and now, this streetfighter from Yamaha has also emerged on the horizon. Do we see a rivalry akin to the CBR150R and R15 taking birth in a price bracket slightly below where the two bikes reside? We wouldn’t be surprised if both these bikes make it to India soon enough.

In the Indonesian market, Honda is the No.1 player. However, in the sporty, 150cc segment Yamaha has the lead with sales of about 20,000 Vixion units per month. It’s for this reason that Honda released the CB150R Streetfire yesterday. The bike has anyway been dubbed as the ‘Vixion Killer’ by the Indonesian media.

Priced at around Rs 1.2 Lakh (22 million Rupiah) in Indonesia, the Vixion is considered as an “R15 Downgrade”, because of the lesser power and lesser power. CB150R basic specs are DOHC, 4 valve, PGM-Fi, and an estimated 15 bhp. While the All New 2013 Yamaha Vixion has SOHC, 4 valve, fuel injection and a 15 bhp power estimation. CB150R and All New Yamaha Vixion are not on sale outside Indonesia as of now.

No prizes for guessing which country gets the two nakeds next 🙂
