The Volkswagen Group is developing an all-new platform specifically for emerging markets like India and Brazil, which will be a combination of their MQB and PQ architectures. Internally called the ‘Emerging Market MQB A0’, the new platform will endow the German auto major to doll out new, more competitive Volkswagen and Skoda cars exclusively catering to markets like ours, built with relatively less investment.

The first model to straddle the new MQB A0 platform will be the next-generation Vento sedan, or the Vento NF (Nach Folger in German). According to industry insiders, who spoke to Economic Times regarding the issue, mentioned that other existing VW Group models sold in India, which include the Polo and the Rapid would be based on the MQB A0 architecture in their preceding generations.

The report also adds that Volkswagen India is yet to recover the investment on its existing PQ25 platform, and bringing the modular MQB platform to India for manufacturing would have incurred a massive investment. As the group heavily depends on exports to recover investment in India, a hybrid platform could be the ideal solution. Volkswagen’s manufacturing plant at Chakan in Maharashtra will also gear up to welcome the incoming platform.
