Volkswagen is working on a rival to the BMW 5-Series, according to a recent report from Autobild.de. The new model, which will also go one-up against the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, will be slotted below VW’s current Phaeton (pictured above) and be offered as a five-door hatchback and a station wagon.

The new line-up might be based on either the Audi A6 or the next-generation US-spec Passat. In terms of powertrain options, the model could be offered with four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel options, both of which could be backed up by an all-wheel drive system.

Both our German and Google Translate are sketchy at best, so we haven’t been able to glean much of the report. But apparently, nothing is concrete yet, so this could all take some time to come to fruition.

According to Autobild, the new model might be priced around the €37,500 ($46,065) mark, and be built in China, Mexico or the United States. Wait and watch.
