Update: Volkswagen India has released an official statement citing the reasons for holding off the deliveries of the Polo. Apparently, the exercise is ensure that the deliveries of cars from a certain production period are not made to the customers, owing to some ‘technical reason’. The company also states that the deliveries of the car model from non-impacted period will continue as per schedule. Here’s the official statement.

“Volkswagen India has confirmed a temporary hold on deliveries of its carline Polo due to a technical reason which is currently under evaluation. This concerns a limited number of cars out of a specific production period. Volkswagen further confirms that deliveries for the non-impacted Polo range continues as per schedule. Volkswagen would like to clarify that the temporary hold on deliveries is not related to the ongoing EA 189 diesel engine topi.”

While we all know about the controversy surrounding Volkswagen diesel cars, India as a small market seems to have been relatively unaffected. What comes as a surprise at this point in time, though, is that the company has directed its dealers to not sell any Polo cars to its customers. The decision to not deliver cars applies to all Polo variants, including the petrol powered units, and with immediate effect.

A report on ET shows the image of a letter by Volkswagen addressed to its dealers, directing them not to “physically deliver” any Polo cars to their customers.

“We request, not to physically deliver any Polo vehicle (all variants) with immediate effect till further notice from VW,” the dealers seem to have been told, according to the letter.

The official letter has been signed by Ashish Gupta – Head of After Sales – Operations, and Pankaj Sharma, Head of Sales Operations at Volkswagen India.

According to the website of the leading financial newspaper, the company has confirmed the development, but not made any further comments saying that more details will be shared later in the evening.

Much as most of us would think of the decision as a development linked with the global crisis the German carmaker is facing with its cars not complying with emissions norms, the company management has refuted any such connection. The company, apparently, has clarified that the decision doesn’t have anything to do with the controversy surrounding the emissions scandal.

We have stumbled upon this piece of information only recently, and in all probability, should be able to get you more information on the subject in a short while.
