The folks at IAB have stated that the highly anticipated next gen Honda City has reached the Automotive Research Association of India for homologation purposes. It may be noted that while Honda Cars India haven’t yet announced the launch date of the new gen City, the web world is full of rumors suggesting that the car could make its public debut on November 25.
The City brand has been synonymous with Honda cars in India and is highly responsible for playing an instrumental role in establishing the carmaker in the country. Like we have been saying, till recently, the City used to be the most successful model in the car maker’s product portfolio. However, thanks to Indian car market’s fast growing affinity for cars with diesel engines, sales of Honda City have taken a big hit. So bad is the situation that Honda Cars India could manage to sell only 31 units of City last month and this alone shows that the car has reached of its career.
Responsible for the City’s fast approaching demise is the fact that the City never came with a diesel engine option. While Honda Cars India did come up with a new 1.5 litre iDTEC diesel engine recently, shoe-horning it into the City, which is several years old now, would have translated into a feasibility study gone really wrong. However, all this would change with the advent of the next gen 2014 Honda City.
The next gen 2014 Honda City is expected to be larger than the current model. As has always been the case, the new City will be based on the new Jazz and would be more feature laden than the current model. The diesel motor that would power the new City is the same oil burner that powers the Amaze. However, we expect that the motor would get a VGT and hence, would have at least 118PS of max power. Also, it is likely to have 220Nm of peak torque.
Visually, the upcoming car is expected to borrow many design cues from the latest gen Jazz. The car could also have a hint of the new Crider sedan in its design.
We believe that the upcoming 2014 City could up the ante in its segment.
