The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback has been revealed ahead of its debut at the Paris motor show later this month and it looks bonkers! Previewed by the Civic Hatchback Prototype from last year’s Geneva Motor Show, the 10th-generation Civic Hatchback comes with all-new styling that accurately reflects its plan to attract younger customers to the brand. The 10th-generation Civic is now manufactured and exported from Honda’s UK manufacturing base in Swindon, the new global production hub for the model.

The Hatchback retains the sexy, coupe-like roof line from its sedan sibling, but it ends in a craggy rear end with edges that’d probably cut paper with the ease of a pair of high-quality SCHMETZ scissors. The rear flaunts its impossibly raked rear window, C-shaped LED tail lamps that lead to the bridge-like rear spoiler, an aggressively styled tail gate, while there’s another roof spoiler guarding the rear window from the top. The rear bumper’s a sea of faux mesh inserts finished in gloss black, with the only metallic respite coming in the form of the centrally positioned, chrome tipped exhaust pipes.

Up front, just like the sedan, the H-face, now finished in gloss black, involves a chunky element that characterises the fascia, and is flanked by the sleekly styled, full LED headlamps. The front bumper follows the theme from the one at the back, with massive faux mesh inserts done up in complementing gloss black, while being underlined with a chin spoiler of sorts. There’s some skirting on the sides as well, along with five-spoke alloy wheels that are finished in gloss black as well.

To put it in numbers, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is 4497 mm long, 1800 mm wide and 1421 mm tall, while having a wheelbase of 2700 mm. These dimensions make it 130 mm longer, 30 mm wider and 20 mm lower than the previous generation model, with a 30 mm longer wheelbase. Built on an all-new platform, the new Civic Hatchback also has 52% greater torsional stiffness than its predecessor, while being 16 kg lighter, thanks to the more intensive usage of ultra-high-strength steel.

The larger footprint on the outside, especially the longer wheelbase, means more room on the inside. Rear leg room has increased by a claimed 95 mm and there’s more shoulder room in the front and rear. Boot space remains the same as before, at 478 litres, which is considerably more than it rivals, while Honda has done away with the flexible Magic Seats from the Jazz and reverted to a more traditional 60:40 rear seat split.

The interiors are not as radically appointed as the last generation, while the dashboard’s design, still sleek as ever, bears a family resemblance to the Jazz. As for equipment, the new Civic Hatchback’s highlight is the 7-inch touchscreen equipped, second-generation Connect infotainment system, which integrates both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The different audio options include a four-speaker, 160W system, an eight-speaker, 180W system and a premium system with 11 speakers.

As for power, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback gets two new turbocharged petrol engines: a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit with 127 bhp, and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit with 180 bhp. Both are available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT. There’s also a 1.6-litre diesel engine on offer, which has been carried over from the outgoing generation, but has been tuned to improve its power output from the current 118 bhp rating. There’s no hybrid power planned for now.

The new Civic Hatchback will be available in four trim levels, with all of them featuring a host of safety systems like a Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and blind-spot information. In the UK, the five-door hatchback in these images will be followed by a new Civic Tourer estate and Type R hot hatchback. The sedan and the upcoming three-door coupe variant however, won’t be offered in the UK. As for India, we’ll only get the sedan next year.
