Tata and Mahindra likely to announce their respective compact SUVs soon

Compact SUV segment witnessed some really good days over the last two years. The main reason for this boom was the entry of Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport. However, Indian manufacturers have yet not been able to utilise the interest of audience in this segment. Mahindra’s offering in this segment Quanto didn’t perform as well as it was expected.

But now, Indian manufacturers are pulling up their sleeves to take on their global counterparts. Tata has already showcased its crossover prototype called the Nixon at the 2014 edition of Delhi Auto Expo. Mahindra is also working on its compact SUV.

The Nexon will be based on Vista X1 platform which is expected to be powered by 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron engine which would be capable of producing 84 bhp and 140Nm of torque. A 1.3-litre diesel engine will also make way.

Mahindra on the other hand is working on a compact SUV which will be designed in line with the XUV500. Mahindra has codenamed the upcoming compact SUV as S101. Powering the is expected to be the same 1.5-litre twin-turbo diesel powertain that is found on the Quanto. The petrol unit is expected to be borrowed from Mahindra’s Korean partner SsangYong.

These two vehicles are expected to be launched late this year or earlier next year.
