Land Rover’s all-new Discovery Sport has been caught without any camouflage on the roads of Mumbai. The 2015 Discovery Sport will be replacing the outgoing Freelander as the British carmaker’s entry-level luxury SUV. Underneath the new Discovery Sport, is the same platform as that found in the Freelander and suave-looking Range Rover Evoque. That said, Land Rover claims that they have made several major modifications to this car’s platform. Unlike Land Rover vehicles of yore, the 2015 Discovery Sport gets most of its styling cues from the new generation of Range Rover family of SUVs. However, the rugged charm of older Land Rovers haven’t been lost and the design of the 2015 Discovery Sport looks contemporary, yet without fading out its forerunners’ muscular appeal.

From the rear, the new Discovery Sport is unmistakably a Land Rover.

The new Discovery Sport is longer than the Freelander 2 it replaces and at 2741mm, the wheelbase is longer too. The new model is slightly shorter (1724mm) than the older Freelander 2 (1740mm) and as a result, aids in the car’s aerodynamics and makes it look less boxy. Land Rover’s new Discovery Sport also ford through waterbodies that are up to 600mm in depth. The exterior of the 2015 Discovery Sport gets xenon headlights, LED foglights and at the back, LED taillights. The front and rear bumpers get a new, more muscular design and come with skid plates for added protection, should you get adventurous.

Upon launch, the 2015 Discovery Sport will be sold in India with a ‘first-in-segment’ 5+2 seating configuration. Features on the new model include touchscreen infotainment system, leather upholstery, automatic dual-zone climate control system, panoramic sunroof, front seats with electric adjustment, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, Anti-lock Braking System, Roll Stability Control, Electronic Traction Control, and more.

Land Rover will likely bring the 2015 Discovery Sport to India with two engines – a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol and a 2.2-litre 4-banger turbo diesel engine. The engines will come mated to an all-new 9-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel drive system. The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport will come to India via the CKD route and will be assembled at JLR’s Pune facility.
