Spied Again: 2014 BMW S1000RS

2014 BMW S1000RS

It’s quite some time since we had posted spy pics of the BMW S1000RR Streetfigher avatar- and thanks to Online Motorcycle Magazine ‘RideApart.com’ the new naked Beemer on the block has been spy spotted again in Germany, but this time the visuals are much clearer. Though RideApart calls it the S1000S, we’d rather term it as the BMW S1000RS going by the suffixes used by BMW where ‘RS’ is referred to as a Road Sport variant.

Getting down straightaway to the comparisons with the S1000RR- the positions of the asymmetrical headlights have been swapped on the naked bike i.e. the high beam on the right has now been positioned on the left replacing the usual halogen-reflector assembly with a projector. The swingarm is a blacked out unit as against the brushed aluminium finish and the hydraulic steering damper is quite visible mounted under the headlights.

Despite being a streetfighter, the 2014 BMW S1000RS does manage to retain fair bit of plastics around the engine. The bikini fairing in comparison to the last reported images is much closer to the lights. The clip-ons are replaced by a tubular handlebar with the mirrors slightly different in design to the S1000RR.

Also recollecting the earlier spy pictures of the motorcycle, the present sports golden front forks (as on the S1000RR) against the aluminium finished tubes. In fact we could recollect a similar picture reported as long as last year, when ‘MotorCycleNews.com’ spy snapped the Beemer with golden forks and an Akrapovic exhaust unit as seen on the HP4. Now it won’t be out of place to assume that BMW might be testing two variants of the S1000RS- with one sporting exotic componentry.

Nonetheless it’s been a pretty long time since these bikes have been on a test run, and with the KTM 1290 SuperDuke out for unveiling in less than a week’s time- seems like BMW is all set for a hard strike as it had done with the S1000RR. With power figures on the SuperDuke being speculated between 180-200 bhp, we extremely eager to see what numbers the 2014 BMW S1000RS manages to crank.

  1. The current crop of super-naked bikes confuses me. While I find an upright riding position and more comfortable ergonomics appealing, the lack of windshield and farings in combination with high speeds sounds needlessly uncomfortable. As a concept, the “gentleman sport bike” (e.g., Ninja 1000) concept makes more sense than the super-naked concept. Many American riders are too old, too large, or both for sport bike ergos but still like the speed and dynamic handling sport bikes offer. From my perspective, the best way to build a sport bike for the aged and/or obese market segment is to retain the windshield and farings while making the ergos more comfortable. That said, the Aprilia Tuono, KTM 1190, MV Brutale, Kawi Z1000, and the expected BMW S1000RS are amazing motorcycle even if one must endure hurricane force winds to ride these bikes fast.
