Rumour Mill: Yamaha MT-03 reportedly patented In India, launch likely to happen in 2016

Yamaha MT-03 - 6

The most likely strategic move from India Yamaha Motor, after the launch of the much awaited YZF-R3, would be to introduce the MT-03 naked roadster to the Indian turf and it seems like that’s what the Indian arm of the Japanese two-wheeler plans to do in the near future. If recent reports are to be believed, India Yamaha Motor has filed the patents for the MT-03 in the Indian two-wheeler market and this stripped down version of the YZF-R3 is likely reach the Indian shores by 2016.

The Yamaha YZF-R3 is placed against the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the MT-03 will do the same against the slightly smaller displacement engine equipped Z250 in the Indian market. The Yamaha MT-03 will have an edge over the Kawasaki in terms of power output. However, it’s not the green monster that Yamaha should be worried about. It’s the little orange devil from Austria, named the KTM Duke 390, that has been changing the game in the entry level performance motorcycle segment and it is nearly impossible to undercut this Indo-Austrian product in terms of pricing and match its performance in that range.

While competing with KTM-Bajaj alliance may not be on the agenda for Yamaha, the Japanese two-wheeler maker should also keep an eye on the Italian offering in the segment, the Benelli TNT300.

We really cannot pin-point on the pricing front but Yamaha may try to undercut the Kawasaki Z250 which retails at Rs 2.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Wouldn’t that be a sweet deal? 1. suzuki inazuma might have been a contender here, but since its not produced anymore, out of the question.
Where's the mojo? AFAIK mojo was supposed to feature that 300cc single pot powerplant inside.and its got some extremely ferocious competition against it already.so mahindra has to work out some pretty convincing USP if it wants the mojo to survive the market. coming back to MT 03, dunno why im getting the feeling it would be renamed fz 03 instead. gauging by the pics,it might turn out to be damn costly. I like this strategy- 150 contenders YZF -R15 & FZ16/fazer and now YZF -R3 and the MT-03.interesting

  2. need to understand the pricing… how do these bike makers decide the same
    in 3.5 lakh i may own a 4 wheel

  3. the bike should come with ABS as an option atleast.
Its high time japnese makers give a serious thought on that front.
