Rumour mill: Maruti Suzuki Ignis India launch scheduled for festive season

The upcoming festive season seems to  be bringing not only a few holidays but also quite a good number of launches with respect to the Indian automotive industry. A number of models from various manufacturers are scheduled to launch during the month of October-November. Take the case of India’s largest automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki, which already has plans to launch the Baleno RS during the aforementioned period.

It is now learnt that giving company to the Baleno RS for a launch during the festive season could be the company’s third sub four metre vehicle, the Ignis. A few reports had earlier suggested that the company had postponed the launch of the Ignis to next year, although now Maruti Suzuki has itself confirmed that the model will be launched this year indeed. Once launched, the model will be sold exclusively through the Nexa chain of premium dealerships.

Test mules of the Ignis have been spotted during their public road tests abroad as well as on Indian soil. Powering the model internationally is a 1.25 litre four cylinder K12 DualJet petrol engine that is tuned to produce 91 PS and 118 Nm of torque. This motor comes mated to a SHVS mild hybrid system. The Indian spec models are expected to be propelled by a 1.2 litre VTVT petrol engine while a Fiat sourced multijet diesel engine could also arrive later in its life cycle. Transmission duties will be performed by a 5 speed manual transmission as standard while an Auto Gear Shift (AGS) could also be available as an option.

Dimension wise, the India spec Ignis will remain identical to the international spec model. This means dimension wise, the successor to the Ritz measures 3,700 mm in length, 1,660 mm in width and 1,595 mm in height while the wheelbase stands at 2,435 mm. After its launch during the festive season, the Ignis will rival the likes of the Ford Ecosport and the Mahindra KUV100.
