If a recent report is to be believed, Suzuki is likely to manufacture the next generation Jimny in India. While a few of us might not know much about the Jimny, let us tell you that one of the favourite models from the house of Maruti Suzuki, the Gypsy was based on this very model. The Gypsy was the long wheelbase, four door version of the sub-compact SUV.

Production for the next generation Jimny is likely to take place in the country and hence the chances of the model being sold locally seem to be bright. Based on the same platform as the current-gen Baleno and the upcoming Ignis, the sub-compact SUV will be exported to regions such as Europe, South East Asia and Brazil. The manufacturing for the next gen Jimny will take place at the company’s upcoming plant in Gujarat that is scheduled to start in 2017.

Although unconfirmed, it is said that the Jimny could be powered by the 1.0 litre boosterjet petrol engine that will make its debut in India with the Baleno RS. A diesel engine might not be on the cards, but a 1.4 litre  boosterjet engine could also be offer.

The report further added that Maruti Suzuki could be contemplating introducing this new generation Jimny as the upcoming Gypsy in order to keep alive the brand which has been a popular choice in the Indian army apart from its regular fans. This Indian version though, would have an extended wheelbase and a four door setup as compared to the conventional Jimny.
