New Hero Leap hybrid scooter expected to be launched in 2015

One step by a manufacturer, a giant “Leap” for the country. This statement can easily be associated to the country’s first hybrid scooter, Hero Leap. After contributing to market’s 100cc fuel efficient motorcycle segment, Hero MotoCorp now takes things a notch up as they introduce a hybrid scooter providing even better fuel efficiency levels.

First showcased in 2012 Auto Expo, Hero Leap hybrid scooter will be powered by an electric motor which will be incorporated by “a range extender – an on-board generator set”. The on-board generator would be charged by a 124 cc petrol engine which would make 11bhp. Company claims that the Leap can achieve top speed of 100 km/h. Normally, the Leap would be recharged by plugging into a wall outlet, but if that isn’t available, the 3-liter fuel tank and the range extender of the Leap would give this hybrid four times the range of batteries alone. Petrol can be quickly refilled.

However, Hero MotoCorp remains skeptical to the level of demand for the Leap and plans to launch the model internationally first. Pawan Munjal, CEO and MD, Hero Motocorp, stated that the Leap would initially be launched in international markets like the US and Europe and then brought to India.

Reports suggest that this hybrid scooter would be made at Hero’s Gurgaon facility. Not expecting a huge demand, Hero MotoCorp may the annual production volume to 6,000 units and this could be increased as per the demand.

Hero MotoCorp has been known for making fuel efficient motorcycles which provide better running costs. Now, with the railway fares hike, we believe that hybrid vehicles would be a great hit.
