Motorcycle Law in Ghana, West Africa now only allows women to ride!

Since April this year, the Bawku town in Ghana has been plagued with violence by criminals who were always able to escape; thanks to fast motorcycles! In a bid to control the escalating situation, a ban was placed on riding motorbikes in Ghana.

The ban has now been lifted; but only for women! Since, the ruling was causing a lot of inconvenience in carrying out routine activities like household shopping or getting the sick transported to a hospital from rural areas. However, the women are forbidden to give a ride or to transport men under any circumstances. If found doing so, the woman is bound to be arrested following seizure of the motorbike.

I've checked the map and you are right, I will be far from there. Phew!

  2. that's probably just in Bawku, a town near the border in Upper East. Your route won't take you anywhere near it 🙂

Does this mean if I ride through these areas as a male westerner on a motorbike I could be arrested and the bike taken off me, or has this now that it is 2012 been over turned?
